Low fare Airlines near Gothenburg

There are a few low fare airlines in the Gothenburg regions. Some years ago there were more low fare airlines but because some of them have gone bankrupt there are now only a few left now. I will list a few tips to each one of them. The routes of the airlines keep changing so I have therefore not taken the time to write about any specific airline destination. Gothenburg have two airports, both are about a half an hour from the city. From Säve airport you have Ryan air, Wizz Air and Air Berlin and all the rest go from Landvetter. Säve airport is in the city of Gothenburg and a first tips is to use the local busses instead of the expensive airport busses which departure unnecessary early. To find the local buss times use this link. This ticket cost 14 sek instead of 70 sek and will take you anywhere you want in Gothenburg. To find the bus stop just walk to the big road (only road) 10 minutes from the airport.

Ryan air is one of the few low fare airlines nowadays that have the lowest prices. Despite this they actually make a lot of profit. To book, use this link, then you see the whole week instead of  each day separately. They have had offers for quite some time where you only had to pay for the taxes but recently they started as well to sell tickets where they paid for the taxes. Instead they make profit by commercials, selling snacks, a high luggage fee as well as some “hidden fees”. However it’s possible to skip all of them, me and a friend booked a return ticket to Dublin (January 2009) for a total cost of 4sek.  Maybe you don’t need any luggage to check in or you can share a bag with a friend. Ryan air has one of the hugest credit cards fees, for two people it can cost almost 200 sek. You will have to pay the fee with any normal credit card. In fact you have to pay it even with Ryan air own credit card! The only credit card which has no fee is VISA Electron. VISA electron is a debit card, however a VISA debit card is necessary not a VISA Electron card. Three Swedish banks offer VISA Electron; Forex, Nordea & Skandiabanken. Forex is the only one which doesn’t have any fee.

As for Wizzair, skip the service fee by paying via Bankgiro. Note that this is only possible for trips which departure from Sweden. if you have travel insurance at the credit card connected to the bank account it might also cover the internet payment (Swedbank does this). Don’t book “connection-flight” more than 2 month in advance because Wizzair sometimes decide to change/cancel their routes… For all the other flight I recommend to as well use some sky scanner like STA Travel, Momondo or Skyscanner.

Another option is to use one of the airports which are nearby Gothenburg; Kastrup (Copenhagen), Skavsta, Oslo and Sturup and take a inexpensive airline company like Norwegian. Really consider this, a train ticket to Copenhagen cost 140 sek compared with a bus ticket to Landvetter which is 70 sek. There are also going busses to Copenhagen but as for Gothenburg <> Copenhagen there are no trains or busses which are going during the night, so don’t take any early flights!
